Understanding the competence ladder is crucial for our growth. By recognising where we stand, we can identify our gaps and chart a course for continuous improvement and sustained growth.

Like climbing a ladder, the competence ladder symbolises our development journey as adults.

At the bottom of the ladder lies the unconscious incompetence stage, where we are unaware of our lack of proficiency/knowledge in a particular area. We don’t know much we will need to learn. We tend to be blissfully unaware but highly motivated and excited about what is ahead of us.

As we ascend to the next stage, conscious incompetence, a light begins to illuminate our path. We become aware of our shortcomings and recognise the need to breach the gap between now and mastery. This stage is pivotal as it ignites the spark of motivation and drives us to seek growth and learning opportunities, but it can be hugely challenging. We now know how much we need to learn and work towards our goals. We are most likely to give up here. (Be good to yourself).

Moving further up the ladder, we reach the stage of conscious competence. Here, we have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge through deliberate practice and effort. We can perform tasks proficiently, but it requires concentration and focus. We know what we know; it's like learning a new dance move—you can do it, but you still need to think about each step.

Nearly at the top of the ladder lies unconscious competence. This is the stage where skills/knowledge are achieved, and they become second nature. Like riding a bike effortlessly or playing a musical instrument without thinking, we can perform tasks with ease and precision, almost on autopilot. This stage is where we gain confidence and find security in our progress.

Finally, at the peak of the ladder is mastery, where our skills become second nature and we perform effortlessly. Mastery is not just about reaching a high level of competence; it's about our ongoing growth and refinement and our ability to teach others tasks we’ve mastered. Danger: If we stay here too long, we may get restless for a new challenger or too comfortable.
